Teaching Primary Students About Terry Fox

Terry Fox activities and information pack for Grades 1-3
Every September students across Canada -and across the world- take part in the Terry Fox day run. This is done to commemorate Terry Fox and his amazing accomplishments to help further cancer research.

It was Terry's hope to run across Canada to raise money for a cure for cancer. Terry himself had cancer, and ran his 'Marathon of Hope' on a prosthetic leg. Terry ran 42 km (26 miles) per day, covering 6 Canadian provinces. Unfortunately Terry's cancer returned and he had to end his run. He received lots of support, and raised over 24 million dollars!
Every September there is a Terry Fox run to raise money for cancer research. Maybe your school participates too. I often find that my students know a little bit about Terry Fox, but are not quite sure who he was or what the run is for. This year I decided to make a pack to help explain about Terry's story, provide information about the Marathon of Hope, and to share about Terry's legacy. I have included corresponding activities to provide deeper understanding about this true Canadian hero.
Celebrating the Canadian Hero Terry Fox! This teaching resource includes information and activities that will help students learn about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope. It includes information charts, a timeline of events, pictures, graphic organizers, and worksheets.
