Our book studies have featured books of a different genre every month. In December my class enjoyed the realistic fiction found in Junie B. Jones is Captain Field Day
As always, before we begin a book study we gather into groups to discuss what the book might be about, what genre it could be, and who may be some characters in the story.
It made for a great lesson on how the character changes in the story. It also showed how you can tell a lot about the characters by their actions. Junie thought that as Captain Field Day she got to be the boss of everyone. She even wanted to dress like a super hero!
Throughout the day, however, Junie changed from a bossy leader to what a captain should be, a team supporter.
Students learned how to do a close read, as they dug into the text for evidence.
What I LOVE about doing novel studies is that I always choose books that are part of a series. That way, when they see how much they LOVE the story we're doing as a class, they seek out more during read to self time.
And isn't getting them to LOVE reading the whole point? :)
